CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. -- The 27 students in David Upegui's Advanced Placement biology class have spent the last six weeks exploring animal behavior, ecosystems and the impact of climate and the biosphere. Later this week, they will be tested on ecology, one of eight areas they must master to pass the course that many of the students describe as the toughest they have ever taken.

A national group seeking to select a bipartisan presidential ticket made its official debut in Rhode Island last week. Americans Elect held a brief meeting at Brown University's Taubman Center for Public Policy on Thursday night attended by about 15 people.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- With 35 doctors in his extended family, 18-year-old Rajiv Kumar arrived at Brown University in 2001 for an eight-year program to earn his own medical degree. But along the way, an idea took hold of him. He'd seen too many patients who struggled to lose weight and exercise regularly.

A new and bigger crop of primary-care doctors, dentists, mental-health providers and others is being drawn to work in parts of Rhode Island where there aren't enough health professionals.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The bride wore white and the groom, a tuxedo of sorts. But it wasn't one of those mega-thousand-dollar destination weddings. Geralyn Hoffman and Larry Ducady, sweethearts and exercise companions for the past 2½ years, tied the knot on Easton's Beach Sunday afternoon after running 26.2 miles in the Amica Marathon.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Jose A. Tolentino served in Iraq in 2004 and 2005 with the Rhode Island National Guard. In 2008 and 2009, he was deployed to Afghanistan. Home in Rhode Island last winter, he slept in his car.
